One Piece Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.

This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
