Ex- FBI chief James the former director has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to US legislators and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.
His lawyer submitted the answer acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.
Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would attempt to have the case thrown out for various causes including that his client, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being targeted.
Mr Comey was indicted just days after Trump pushed his top legal official to take action against him.
In court on mid-week, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald informed the court they intended to submit several petitions to terminate the legal matter before a trial, claiming the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was improperly appointed to take over the legal matter.
Mr Comey's case was first managed by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under scrutiny from the former president after his probe into an additional political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to file indictments.
The former director came across in positive mood as he came into the legal venue on mid-week, speaking with his lawyers and making jokes. He was joined by his wife, his wife and offspring his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration recently fired.
Following the reading to the judge recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he grasped the accusations.
"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the proceedings.
James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as president. At the period, Mr Comey was leading an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the election effort.
During his tenure, Mr Comey triggered a backlash from Democrats when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.
Government attorneys claim the former director lied to Congress during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he deceived the Senate by claiming he had not authorized a person at the agency to leak to news outlets data about the agency probes.
Legal representatives also charge Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, obstruct and slow" the legislative group by making false statements to it.
Through a recording the former director posted to his Instagram after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "tyrant".
"Our household have known for years that there are costs to challenging the former president," he said. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "So let's have a trial."
These allegations against James Comey came after Trump posted on digital channels insisting on his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and additional individuals.
