Reported Scheme to Attack Belgian PM Foiled

Belgian Prime Minister the country's leader

Belgian authorities have taken into custody three individuals accused of planning an assault on the government's PM, Bart de Wever.

Prosecutors described the alleged scheme as a "jihadist-inspired terrorist attack" targeting the PM and fellow elected representatives.

During investigations conducted in Deurne, Antwerp, in proximity to the premier's personal dwelling, authorities found a suspected homemade bomb and indications that the accused were intending to employ a drone.

While the prospective targets of the strike were not publicly identified by the federal prosecutors, Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevot confirmed that de Wever was one of them.

"The news of a premeditated attack directed toward PM Bart de Wever is profoundly disturbing," Prevot declared in a post on online platforms on the investigation day.

"It emphasizes that we are confronting a very real terrorism risk and that we have to stay alert," he continued.

The three people taken into custody on suspicion of terrorism-related attempted murder and engagement in the functions of a extremist organization all reside in the city of Antwerp, per the prosecutor's office. They were with years of birth in the early 2000s.

On late Thursday, one suspect was let go, while two others were undergoing questioning and scheduled to face a judge on the next day.

Legal authorities revealed that the suspects were arrested after a judge authorized searches of their homes in the location by police officers assisted by explosive sniffer dogs.

In the course of these raids that they found a object which closely resembled a homemade bomb, lead prosecutor Ann Fransen announced at a press conference on the day of the events.

Searches also found a container of metal spheres and a additive manufacturing device, with signs of drone weaponization plans, she continued.

The prosecutor disclosed that there had been 80 extremist probes opened in the country this year - more than the total number of cases in 2024.

Earlier this year, five individuals were found guilty for a previous year's plan to attack De Wever while he was acting as the mayor of Antwerp.
