In the course of a latest visit to Japan's capital, ex- American leader Donald Trump and Japan's recently elected Premier Sanae Takaichi shared friendly compliments and pledged to enhance the already strong two-way relations.
Trump commended Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘exceptional’ figure and congratulated her on becoming the nation's first female prime minister. In their talks at Tokyo's Akasaka Palace, the former president voiced confidence that she would prove to be one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of Japan.
Takaichi, identified as a close associate of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, applauded Trump's efforts to address international conflicts and reportedly vowed to put forward Trump for the prestigious award.
The two nations revealed a series of collaborative projects in areas such as power, AI, and rare earths. Japanese firms are considering funding of up to $400 billion in the United States.
Furthermore, Tokyo had previously pledged $550bn in long-term American projects, loans, and guarantees as part of an arrangement to secure relief from Trump's tariffs.
Such moves are viewed as potentially easing any future requests from the US side for Tokyo to boost its military expenditure. Takaichi addressed this by committing to accelerate proposals to increase military budget to 2% of gross domestic product.
“Everything I know from Shinzo and others, you will be one of the great prime ministers,” Donald Trump told Takaichi. “I also want to congratulate you on becoming the first female prime minister. This is a significant achievement,” he added.
The meeting highlights the continuing significance of the American-Japanese alliance and sets the stage for additional cooperation on economic, security, and diplomatic areas.
