United Nations Security Council members voted in favour to an American proposal ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit the following week.
Sharaa was named interim leader subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that removed Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of internal conflict.
America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" following Assad's ouster.
Sharaa was under UN sanctions while commanding the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to the extremist organization. The US removed HTS from a list of foreign terror groups this past July.
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.
The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and allied countries for their support the country and its population."
President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week occurs subsequent to President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.
The two leaders convened for the first time during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip on a tour of the Middle East.
After that meeting, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country prior to breaking relations in 2016.
Monday's visit does not represent his initial visit to the United States this year. This past fall, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the United Nations gathering in Manhattan for nearly six decades.
During his address, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position within the global community" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
