The global public health agency disclosed intentions to cut its staff by almost a quarter – amounting to more than 2,000 positions – by the middle of 2026.
The move follows following the United States, previously the organization's biggest contributor, pulled out funding previously this period.
Washington had been responsible for about 18% of the organization's total budget, causing a significant budgetary shortfall.
Based on organizational estimates, the workforce is expected to drop from 9,401 posts in January 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.
The reduction of 2,371 posts comprises staff reductions, employees retiring, and regular departures.
"The past year was one of the toughest in our history, while we undertook a painful but necessary process of prioritisation and realignment," commented the organization's director-general.
This Switzerland-headquartered organization currently faces a funding shortfall of 1.06 billion dollars for the 2026-2027 period, representing almost a quarter of its total funding.
This amount marks an reduction from a previous estimated shortfall of 1.7 billion dollars noted in May.
The financial calculations do not include a further $1.1bn in expected contributions from ongoing discussions with multiple donors.
